The KahBang Festival is an annual nine-day event composed of music, film and art festivals that takes place every August in Bangor, Maine, United States. KahBang began in 2009 and is centered around the historic Bangor waterfront and downtown. The three parts of Kahbang run congruently during the duration of the festival.

History

KahBang has quickly become one of the largest indie rock festivals in New England. Dozens of performers play in venues in downtown Bangor throughout the festival, culminating with over 30 musical acts performing on the waterfront concert grounds on the final two days of the festival.[1][2]

The festival was founded in 2009 by Timothy Lo and Chas Bruns, featuring acts including Matt and Kim, Ra Ra Riot, Ida Maria, April Smith, Royal Bangs, The Gay Blades and The Killing Moon.[3]

In 2010 the festival expanded to include a film festival. Like its counterparts, the film festival focused on showcasing up-and-coming filmmakers and independently produced works. The inaugural lineup of films included the Maynard James Keenan documentary Blood Into Wine and the indie feature comedy New Low. [4]

The headliners for the 2010 Music Festival featured viral video icons OK Go, and hip hop artist B.o.B. [5][6] The lineup also included performances by Bad Rabbits, Free Energy and Hey Marseilles, drawing over 6,000 people on the final day of performances. [7]

The 2011 headliners are confirmed currently as Lupe Fiasco, My Morning Jacket, Chromeo, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, and Atmosphere.

In 2011, the KahBang Film Festival debuted a new and unique format, becoming one of the newest film festivals in the United States to discover and showcase the work from Emerging Filmmakers throughout the world. Their programming continues to be unique by also showcasing the best new Comedy features, Music Documentaries, and Maine made films. Each year they honor one notable actor, actress, or filmmaker with the "Kevin Norwood Bacon Award for Achievement in Cinema", acknowledging the success the recipient has achieved in being so closely connected to Kevin Bacon. One of their films is screened in the KahBang Off Screen Category, "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" which connects the honored back to the man himself.

The directors include Timothy Lo, Josh Gass, Chris Michaud, Dustin Levine, Josh Whinery, and Pat Shaw.
